Community Legal Education Ontario / Éducation juridique communautaire Ontario (CLEO)

Since 1974, CLEO (Community Legal Education Ontario / Éducation juridique communautaire Ontario) has developed clear, accurate, and practical legal rights education and information to help people understand and exercise their legal rights. Our work focuses on providing information to people who face barriers to accessing the justice system, including income, disability, literacy, and language. As a community legal clinic and part of Ontario's legal aid system, we work in partnership with other legal clinics and community organizations across the province.

Policy Centre for Victim Issues

The Policy Centre for Victim Issues implements the Federal Victim Strategy the objective of which is to give victims of crime a more effective voice in the criminal justice system. We develop policy and criminal law reform, administer the Victims Fund, and broadly share information about issues of importance to victims of crime.

Office for Victims of Crime

The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) is an independent advisory agency that provides advice to the Attorney General of Ontario on victims’ issues, including:

• Ways to ensure the principles set out in the Act Respecting Victims of Crime – Victims’ Bill of Rights, 1995 (Victims’ Bill of Rights) are respected;
• The development, implementation and maintenance of provincial standards for services for victims of crime;
• The use of the Victims’ Justice Fund to provide and improve services for victims of crime;
• Research and education on the treatment of victims in the criminal justice system and ways to prevent further victimization; and
• Matters of legislation and policy on the treatment of victims of crime and on the prevention of further victimization.

In order to enhance its advisory capacity on a complex array of victims’ issues, and stay informed of emerging trends relating to victims of crime in Ontario, the OVC engages and consults with a range of stakeholders including government, community groups, academics, and most importantly, victims of crime.

Algonquin College

The Victimology program at Algonquin College is the first graduate certificate program offered by a Canadian College specializing in Victimology. Students learn to understand victim’s rights, sudden and traumatic loss, victim populations, crime, and its effects on victims in the criminal justice system. More than just theory, this unique one-year graduate certificate program puts students in the field so they can learn, first-hand, how to look at issues from the victim’s perspective.

Office of the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime

The Office of the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime (OFOVC) is an independent resource for victims in Canada. The Office was created in 2007 to ensure the federal government meets its responsibilities to victims of crime.
