Responding to Violence against Persons with Disabilities
The Policy Centre for Victim Issues at the Department of Justice Canada is hosting a one-day Knowledge Exchange on Responding to Violence against Persons with Disabilities. The Knowledge Exchange will be held in Gatineau, Québec on December 2, 2019, the day before International Day for Persons with Disabilities.
The Knowledge Exchange will bring together the expertise of various stakeholders in the justice, health, and disability sectors to discuss key issues and share best practices in responding to violence against persons with disabilities. It will also consider the particular issue of violence against seniors with disabilities.
The Knowledge Exchange will include panel discussions on relevant research and statistics on key victimization issues for persons with disabilities; criminal justice system responses to violence against this population; emerging models and promising practices in victim service and support; and issues of violence, disability and intersectionality. Each panel discussion will be followed by a period for questions and answers. The last session of the day will involve small group discussions at participant roundtables to provide participants the opportunity to discuss ideas for improving criminal justice system responses, as well as cross-sector and multi-disciplinary responses.
Participants from across Canada will include victim services providers, criminal justice professionals, disability service providers, victim advocates, disability advocates, experts on senior abuse, academics and federal, provincial and territorial officials.
Law Society Accreditation
We are in the process of applying for accreditation for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours from various provincial and territorial law societies. Further details on accreditation will be provided in advance of the Knowledge Exchange.
